Chapter 27
Chapter 27
Noemi and Cosimo exchanged puzzled looks.
“That’s weird,” Noemi said. “We haven’t helped anyone recently. Who’d spend this kind of money on us?”
At first, they assumed it was some kind of mix up. But when the clerk showed them the receipt–paid in full, cash–they had to accept it was real.
“Maybe a friend spotted us?” Cosimo suggested, though his eyes were already scanning the store. “Wanted to say congrats on the baby but was in a hurry?
It happened again at the next shop. And the next. By the fourth store, Noemi was visibly anxious.
“This is creepy,” she whispered, clutching his arm. “What if someone’s setting us up for something?”
Cosimo’s jaw tightened. He had a strong suspicion who was behind this–confirmed when he caught a glimpse of a familiar figure ducking behind a display. His eyes found his security team positioned around the store. A subtle hand signal: Find him.
“Let’s get lunch,” he said smoothly, guiding her toward the exit. “That new French place you wanted to try?”
“But I thought you had that conference call-”
“It can wait. You need to eat.” He kept his voice light, but his mind was racing. This needed to end. Now.
At the restaurant, he waited until she was settled with the menu before making his move.
“Just need to hit the restroom. Order for us?”
“The duck?”
“Perfect. And get the cheese plate to start–you know how long French service takes.”
He found Alessio in the alley, already cornered by his security. The man looked half–dead, still weak from his hospital stay.
“That’s enough, boys.” Cosimo waved them back. “Give us a minute.”
Alessio tried to straighten up, defiant even while swaying on his feet. “Come to gloat?”
“I came to tell you this stops. Now.”
“She’s still my wife-”
“No.” Cosimo’s voice was ice. “She’s mine. Has been since the day she asked me to marry her. Since she chose to carry my child.”
“We’re still legally married in Italy-”
“Then file for divorce. Or don’t. It doesn’t matter here.” Cosimo stepped closer. “But this stalking? This pathetic attempt to insert yourself in our life? It ends today.”
“You don’t understand what we had-”
“Had. Past tense.” Cosimo’s laugh was harsh. “You want to know what you had? A woman who loved you so much she nearly died when she thought she’d lost you. And what did you do? Fucked your dead brother’s wife for two years.”
Alessio’s face went white. “I was trying to help-”
“Help who? Yourself?” Cosimo grabbed his shirt. “Look at yourself. Go home to Daniela. Accept that you lost everything.”
Before Alessio could respond, an explosion rocked the street.

BOOM!
The restaurant erupted in flames, windows shattering outward. Screams filled the air as black smoke billowed into the sky.
“NOEMI”
The scream tore from Cosimo’s throat as he sprinted toward the inferno. Behind him, Alessio struggled to his feet, equally horrified.
“No… God, no…”
The street was chaos–people running, sirens approaching, flames licking up the building’s facade. Cosimo pushed against the fleeing crowd, his mind consumed by a single thought: She’s in there. My wife. My child. They’re in there.
Guilt crashed over him in waves. He’d left her alone. Left her vulnerable. And for what? To confront a pathetic ex–husband?
He raised his hands and slapped himself hard across the face. Once. Twice.
If I’d just stayed with her… If I hadn’t been so fucking arrogant…
The thought of Noemi trapped in those flames, of their unborn child…
“I’m coming, baby,” he whispered, then louder: “I’M COMING!”
Without hesitation, he charged toward the burning entrance. If she died in there, he’d die with her. Simple as that.
