Chapter

Sophia waited in the hallway for a long time, but Ethan never returned

Instead, she ran into Jason who was on his way to the restroom. Surprised to find her alone, he led her back to their room

In the private dining room, everyone was chatting happily while the seat beside Sophia remained conspicuously empty

Shortly after, Jason approached her with forced casualness. Ethan had an emergency at work. I’ll drive you home afterward.”

Sophia gave him a polite smile. No need. I have something at my studio. I’ll get a ride there. You guys continue.”

She had barely stepped outside when she caught a glimpse of a familiar figure from the corner of her eye

She quietly followed the two silhouettes to a secluded stairwell

Ethan was arguing with a woman

What relationship am I to you, Mr. Fuller? What business is it of yours who I share drinks with?the woman challenged

Ethan angrily punched the wall, seemingly oblivious to the pain.

In the next moment, Sophia clearly saw the woman’s face

It was herthe woman from the aurora

Sophia’s nails dug into her palm as she heard Ethan’s cold yet possessive words

Veronica Chen, isn’t this what you wanted? I’ll give it to you!”

With those words, Ethan suddenly leaned down and covered Veronica’s mouth with his lips, while his other hand tightly gripped her waist, pulling her against him

Veronica kept her eyes open, her gaze falling on Sophia standing outside

Sophia knew that Veronica had spotted her from the beginning

That night, Ethan didn’t come home

He only called to remind Sophia not to forget her nightly glass of milk

Sophia now recalled that she had originally skipped the dinner because of her period

And that night, Ethan hadn’t come home either

At midnight, her phone suddenly rang

She mechanically answered, and before she could react, familiar passionate sounds poured through the receiver

A man’s dominant voice demanded that the woman on the phone admit he was the man she loved most

The woman’s voice rose in passionate waves

Sophia didn’t know how long she listened until the woman spoke to Ethan in a coquettish tone

Ethan, I don’t want to be a homewrecker.”

Ethan’s movements suddenly paused. After a moment, he sighed gently and spoke to the woman

Silly girl, you’re not.”

I just regret that you came into my life too late.”

Sophia clutched the fabric at her chest. Even though her heart had already seen through the truth, it was shattered beyond repair in this moment

Ethan had come to the Fuller house as a stepson at age thirteen

Because of his status, many in their neighborhood looked down on him and bullied him. But Sophia had always stood up for him, reporting to the parents of those who bullied him and watching with Ethan as they got punished

Later, when Sophia was locked in the equipment room by bullies, Ethan found her. Knowing she was afraid of the dark and had claustrophobia, he held her tightly in his arms

He promised Sophia that from then on, he would never let go of her hand or lose her

After their SAT, Sophia discovered her parents had long been divorced but had kept it from her

She fled from home in a daze, but once again, Ethan found her and brought her to the apartment he was renting off campus

Sophia still remembered the promise he made that day

If no one wants you, I want you. If no one will take care of you, I will.”

Ethan had asked Sophia to trust him, saying he would never deceive her in this lifetime

She had believed him

But he had broken his word

Not only that, but Ethan had also told her a monumental lie

Sophia sat motionless until dawn. When the first ray of sunlight fell on her, she rubbed her dry eyes

She took out her phone and called her mother overseas

I want to leave Ethan. Can you help me with something?”

What do you want to do?”

Help me stage a plane crash.”

This was how Ethan had chosen to leave her

And now she wanted him to taste the same pain she had endured
