Chapter 5
He imagined my face lighting up when he texted, but his expression dropped the second he saw that red exclamation mark.
I hadn’t just deleted him–I’d straight–up blocked his ass.
Halfway through my birthday party, dozens of helicopters showered the place with million dollar pink roses from the sky.
In the middle of this crazy flower bomb, Lucas, looking cold as ice, was wheeled out of a helicopter.
He came toward me down the red carpet, his eyes warming like sunlight breaking through ice–something the Ice King had never shown anyone.
My dad’s jaw practically hit the floor. “How the hell did he get here?”
The other guests were just as confused.
Yeah, they all thought Lucas was just some paralyzed guy who couldn’t do shit.
But who was he really? The freaking heir to the capital’s richest family!
If the Hayes family hadn’t been so stuck up about marrying someone in their social class, he could’ve had anyone he wanted.
The Hayes were old money–the real deal in the capital’s elite circles.
The Sinclairs? We just got rich in the last few decades. We had cash, but no class–at least in their eyes.
Everyone figured I’d just be arm candy if I married Lucas, totally convinced the Hayes family wouldn’t give a damn about this marriage.
While everyone was whispering and gossiping, Lucas smiled and said:
“What kind of engagement party doesn’t have a groom?”
“I’m not late, am I?”
He held outa bouquet of rare Bulgarian roses–each petal costing more than my monthly allowance growing up.
He just kept holding them there, waiting for me to take them.
I didn’t leave him hanging. I smiled and took the roses:
“Your timing couldn’t be better.”
The ice between his eyebrows melted away, and for the first time ever, he wasn’t glaring at everyone like they were garbage.
This sudden Mr. Nice Guy act had everyone shook.
Before his accident, Lucas was known as the Ice King, and after? He turned even more cold–blooded–ruthless enough to kick his own dad to the curb.
The second I took Lucas’s hand, Alexander appeared at the entrance, looking like he was ready to kill someone.
Seeing him come back, guests started muttering.
“Looks like Alexander’s having second thoughts.”
“Alexander’s crawling back? Please, he probably realized Ellie’s marrying into the Hayes fortune and his meal ticket’s about to disappear..”
“Alexander and Ellie grew up together. If he just says sorry, she’ll dump this Hayes guy in a heartbeat.”
Before I could say anything, Lucas squeezed my hand tighter.
Lucas kept his poker face, but his eyes? Pure storm brewing.

Chapter 5
The moment Alexander locked eyes with Lucas, he knew he was in deep shit.
Still, he pushed forward like an idiot:
“I’m sorry, Penny was just being dramatic. If she said anything that pissed you off, don’t take it seriously.”
Alexander reached out to me, his eyes practically screaming “stop this crazy stunt.”
Lucas’s face went ice–cold: “And you are…?”
For years, Alexander had been the Sinclair family’s golden boy at every event.
There’s no way Lucas didn’t know exactly who Alexander was.
Everyone realized Lucas was straight–up disrespecting him to his face.
Alexander started to say he was my fiancé, but when he saw my hand in Lucas’s, reality hit him like a truck.
At the end of the day, he was just the Sinclairs‘ adopted charity case–nothing more.
Lucas smirked: “If you’re talking to me as the Sinclair family’s little orphan, you’re not even on my radar.”
Alexander’s face screwed up, but he kept staring at me: “Ellie, are you seriously tossing our relationship aside just because you’re angry?”
Alexander’s knuckles were white from clenching his fists so hard.
I’d known Alexander for years–I could tell he was freaking out.
But why was he so desperate?
Was it because I was marrying Lucas?
Or was he scared the Sinclair fortune would slip through his fingers?
I gave Alexander a smirk so cold it could freeze hell: “Lucas and I are crazy about each other. This has nothing to do with being pissed off. Our marriage is happening. What, you trying to steal me at my own engagement party?”
II used those words on purpose, and sure enough, Alexander fell for it:
“How could I steal you–I…”
His face went from red to white as he choked out: “I just don’t want to see you mess with the Hayes family. If you back out later, it’ll drag the whole Sinclair company down with you!”
