Chapter 17
Tyler’s POV
I stood awkwardly in Nathan’s bar, clutching the medical report fold against my chest.
The colorful scarf Rachel had made for me felt suddenly conspicuous around my neck as Nathan’s cold eyes flicked to it with barely concealed disdain.
“Well?” Nathan prompted, leaning back in his chair with that predatory stillness that always reminded me he wasn’t just my childhood friend, but the Alpha.
“Her test results look good, I reported formally. “Rachel’s been gaindag weight steadily. Her physical condition is significantly improved compared to when she first arrived.”
I hesitated, weighing my next words carefully. I knew what Nathan planned for Rachel after she’d served her purpose. Every time I thought about it, something inside me rebelled against the cold logic of it all,
She deserved better–she’d done nothing to warrant such a fate.
“Based on her responses to things…” I began cautiously, “you know, due to her previous psychological issues–1 have a suggestion, if you’d care to hear it.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened visibly. “Just spit it out,” he snapped.
1 straightened my posture, bracing myself, “I’m merely suggesting you might take a slightly different approach to the situation. Perhaps…gentler than usual. She’s a virgin, after all.”
His expression shifted, eyes narrowing as he studied me. “Tyler, do you have feelings for her?”
The question caught me completely off guard. “Seriously? Nathan, you know she’s just my you think that?”

I’d used his first name, stepping momentarily out of my Beta role into the friend space we’d established growing up together.
But the look on his face made it clear this wasn’t a friendly conversation.
After staring at him for a moment, I couldn’t help but laugh. “No, Nathan. I’m only saying this because it might help the situation.
I shook my head, still smiling as I looked at him. Something in his expression–a tension 1 rarely saw–sparked a realization.
“Are you jealous because she gave me a scarf?” I asked curiously.
“Tyler, # the one asking questions here,” he responded coldly. “I just wonder…why would you care what happens with a breeder?”
The word ‘breeder‘ felt viscerally cruel, a reductive label stripping away every unique quality, every spark of personality, that made Rachel who she was. My loyalty, my protectiveness, surged, I couldn’t stop myself from saying, “Nathan, Rachel is a good girl…”
“Beta, do your job,” he commanded, his authority absolute.
This time, his words were firm, a clear dismissal closing the discussion before it truly began.
He didn’t even pause before adding, his eyes narrowing slightly. “That scarf doesn’t suit you, and I don’t want to see it again.“
“Yes, Alpha,” I replied, my shoulders slumping with a sigh of resignation.

“Beta, is there anything else?” he asked.
I recognized his tone. Our discussion was over.
“No, Alpha, May I be excused?” I replied formally.
He waved his hand dismissively, I turned and walked out the door, my hand unconsciously rising to touch the colorful scarf.

Rachel’s POV
Two days had passed since I’d told Tyler I was ready to fulfill my role as breeder. How time flies when you’re preparing for something that terrifies and intrigues you in equal measure.
Victoria paced excitedly around the study area of my room, her boundless energy making me smile despite my nerves.
“You won’t regret it, you’ll make a great mother!” she exclaimed, her amber eyes bright with enthusiasm.
