Chapter 24
Inside the villa, warmth enveloped every room, a stark contrast to the storm raging outside.
Cosimo had just changed into dry clothes when he found Noemi sitting up in bed, sleepily rubbing her eyes.
“Where’d you go?” she murmured.
The hardness from earlier melted away instantly. This was his Noemi–the only person who could transform him from ruthless heir to devoted husband with just a glance.
“Nowhere important.” He crossed the room and pulled her into his arms, pressing a kiss to her temple. “Just picked up those cannoli you’ve been craving from the bakery.”
Her eyes flew open. “In this storm? Are you crazy?”
“Maybe a little.” He grinned, placing his hand on her still–flat belly. “But when my girls want something, Daddy delivers.”
She covered his hand with hers, marveling at the life growing inside her. “I still can’t believe it’s real.”
After everything–the trauma, the doctors‘ warnings about infertility–this baby felt like a miracle. Maybe God had known all along that Alessio wasn’t meant to be the father of her children.
“Get some rest, bella.” Cosimo tucked her back under the covers. “Both of you need sleep.”
He stayed until her breathing evened out, then headed downstairs. Maria, their housekeeper, was waiting.
“Still out there?”
“Yes, sir. Another full night.”
Cosimo’s expression darkened momentarily before he regained control. “Keep ignoring him. He’s not our problem.”
“Of course, sir.”
“Oh, and Maria? Noemi’s morning sickness is getting worse. Keep everything light–nothing too heavy. Use that prosciutto her parents sent. Maybe a simple pasta with fresh tomatoes?”
“Perfect, sir. I’ll prepare it first thing.”
Once alone, Cosimo picked up the phone and dialed Sicily. When the butler answered, his voice turned arctic.
“Don Moretti. Now.”
Moments later, the elder Moretti’s gruff voice came through.
“Your son is on my property. One month to collect him, or I handle it my way.”
He hung up without waiting for a response.
Outside, Alessio had lost all sense of time. Rain plastered his hair to his skull, seeping into his bones. Every muscle screamed for relief, but still he remained.
She loved me once. She was ready to die with me.
The memory tortured him. How could that kind of love just… vanish? How could she be carrying another man’s child when she’d sworn she couldn’t live without him?
One by one, the villa’s lights went dark. As the last window faded to black, something inside him shattered completely.

Chapter 24
“Noemi,” he whispered to the empty night. “Please…”
But only rain answered.
His legs buckled. Vision swimming, he crashed to the wet ground. As consciousness slipped away, he heard a voice calling his name
“Alessio…”
Noemi? Hope flared briefly before darkness claimed him. But it was just the wind, mocking him onesfinal time as he sank into oblivion.
