Chapter 14
The more Nathan spoke, the more convinced he became of his own reasoning. He even started to feel emotionally moved by his own words.
“Olivia, remember that childbirth documentary we watched right after we got married? How bloody and brutal those scenes were!”
“That’s what giving birth really looks like! So many women lying in delivery rooms, suffering through excruciating pain.”
“Those images hurt me just watching them. How could I bear to let you go through that kind of torture?”
“So isn’t this arrangement perfect?” Nathan held Olivia’s hand tenderly, his eyes full of what he believed was compassion. “Claire gave birth to our children, and you don’t have to endure any pain but still get an adorable set of twins.”
“Having both a son and daughter, becoming a mom without any pain–this is a blessing! Why are you upset about it?”
Listening to Nathan’s outrageous logic, Olivia nearly laughed from anger.
“Nathan, should I be thanking you then?” she asked sarcastically.
“Olivia, don’t be like that. I really did this for your own good,” Nathan said earnestly. “I couldn’t bear to see you suffer, so I thought bringing Michael and Anna to you would let you be their mother.”
“I know Michael and Anna aren’t close to you right now, but that’s only because Claire is still alive.”
“Claire has cancer. She’s going to die very soon.”
“After she dies, you’ll be their only mother. With time, they’ll grow close to you.”
Nathan’s imagination painted a rosy picture, but would reality actually unfold that way?
Given Michael and Anna’s dark personalities, after Claire’s death, they would likely believe Olivia was responsible for killing their mother.
Far from becoming close to Olivia, those little monsters would be showing restraint if they didn’t try to kill her outright.
Besides, Olivia knew better than anyone that Claire didn’t have cancer at all.
“Nathan, stop lying to yourself,” Olivia yanked her hand away and coldly said, “You know better than anyone that Claire doesn’t have cancer.”
“You two have been screwing around so much you’ve nearly broken the bed. Would someone with cancer have that kind of energy to fool around with
you?”
Hearing this, Nathan’s expression shifted noticeably. Clearly, he too had noticed Claire’s inconsistencies.
But he refused to acknowledge it because once he did, he could no longer justify his affair with a clear conscience.
“No… that can’t be right?” Nathan said, putting on an act. “I personally took Claire for her examinations…”
Before Nathan could finish, Olivia coldly cut him off: “Nathan, the way you’re lying to my face right now makes me sick!”
“I don’t want to waste any more words on you. Please leave immediately, or I’m calling the police!”
“Olivia, just listen to my explanation.” Nathan persisted, reaching for Olivia’s hand again.
But this time, before he could touch her, James had already drawn back his fist and landed a solid punch directly to Nathan’s face!
“I can’t listen to this garbage anymore,” James said, flexing his knuckles. “How can someone as disgusting as you exist in this world?”
“Cheating in your marriage is bad enough, but you’re actually trying to justify your affair like it’s some noble sacrifice.”
“Nathan, you’re a disgrace to men everywhere. How the hell did I ever lose to a repulsive piece of trash like you?”
