Chapter 29
KYLIE’S POV
He looked at me with an unreadable expression, and I waited for him to contradict me, or to simply say something. Anything.
“Kylie, you can’t continue like this.” Henry finally said and I drew my brows together.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked a bite in my voice. He sighed and leaned back Ward in his chair.
“This is the second time you’re seeing things. You’re worked up, it’s been an annoying evening, and you’ve been thoroughly pushed. And now… now you may be seeing shadows and figures. But shadows and figures don’t necessarily add up to the marks on the manager.”
“Oh really?” I said incredulously. He was simply going to dismiss what I was saying and act like they weren’t there.
“Yes. And if we are being honest here, I think it’s safe to say that I’m beginning to worry about you.”
“You have got to be kidding me,” I said and pressed my hands to the bridge of my nose. I could not lose my temper. Losing my temper would only serve to amplify whatever Elijah was trying to say.
“I know what I saw, Elijah,” I said with a tone of finality.
“I don’t dispute the fact that you saw what you saw. Indeed, perhaps there were indeed animals out there who were fighting, how is it that you’ve concluded they werewolves?”
“Because they were big! Large really!”
“Or perhaps your mind amplified what they were because you’re going through a whole lot of stress right now.”
“That’s a whole lot of crap.”
“Is it?”
I merely gawked at him. Could it be true then? Was I merely seeing things because I was stressed out?
I considered his words, but to accept his words as truth was to doubt my mind. I didn’t want to doubt my mind for any
reason.
“They were large, Elijah.”
“As large as your mind wanted them to seem.” He said with a charming smile and I narrowed my eyes at him, before turning to the window, as though willing the figures to appear again, so I could be sure. But they didn’t.
I sighed and turned to Elijah.
“Fine. You have a point.” I conceded and his smile only lingered.
“But I still stand that the sculpture at the school must have been a demon,” I said and Elijah looked at me with a pained
expression.
“Even after all this time?” He asked and I drew my brows together.
“After all this time? Elijah that was only days ago. And I’ve had time to think. It wasn’t the wind. That sculpture had a distinct voice that even the wind couldn’t create.”
“Demon,” Elijah said, sounding astonished. “It could have been a prank, have you considered that?”
I hadn’t, but now that he brought it up, he did have a point and the thought of it irritated me.
“If it was something kind of prank, it was a really distasteful one.”
“One that got under your skin. One that I sure won’t let happen again.” He said in a tone that didn’t sit well with me.
“What do you plan on doing? Dismantling the sculpture?” I said, hoping to lighten the mood, but he had something in his eyes that I couldn’t quite reach.
“Dismantling the sculpture won’t do much now, would it?” He asked and smiled thinly, “I’d much rather dismantle the imbecile who did it to you.” He finished and gaped.
“What?”
“Oh don’t act surprised, Kylie. We both know that wellbeing is everything to me. I also know that I can’t be with you 24/7, so for that reason, I’ll get you bodyguards to keep you safe when I can’t.”
“Excuse me, efforts appreciated, but I’m sure I get a say in all this?”
“It’s not really up for much of a debate, Kylie.” He said with a tone of finality… and I snapped.
“Don’t do that.” I said and thumped my hand on the table, “Don’t make such choices for me. I’m capable of taking care of myself.”

“Yeah? How are the hallucinations going?” He retorted and I swore.
“Damn you, Elijah! How dare you use that against me? And I’m not hallucinating!*
“Kylie.” He breathed out and pressed his hand to his eyes, “I really can’t be arguing with you right now. I don’t want to do this. Not here as well.”
“Fine. I’m done arguing too. But forget those thoughts of getting me a bodyguard. Or I’ll show you that I’m capable of ice- cold mayhem.” I said and rose, “Take me home. I’m ready to go home.”
It had been a damn long night already.
That night I couldn’t sleep. Perhaps it was an overactive mind, or the argument with Elijah. But after an hour of trying, I gave up and turned on my laptop. Perhaps a bit of light reading would make me sleepy.
I don’t know what made me do it, or maybe I do know. It was all the werewolf talk. And because of it, I found myself searching the internet about the history of werewolves.
And what I found all but blew my mind.
“These creatures have mutated over centuries.” I read out loud, “bound to the moon by a curse that makes them both beast and man. The cryptozoologists call them “modern werewolves” because, over time, they have found a way to be one with their curse, shape–shifting at will, taking the form of man when they wanted to and the form of the beast when they needed to.”
I felt shivers run up and down my spine when I was done reading and blew out a breath to calm myself.
“so much for wanting to get some sleep.”
But if any of the things I just read were through, that meant it was possible that I was right and the figures I saw earlier in the wolves while at the restaurant were indeed werewolves.
“Dear God.”
The next day, Elijah opted to stay with me.
“Seeing as you are still against the whole bodyguard thing. Surely I’m still allowed to be around you?”
“I’m still mad at you,” I told him but opened my door widely to let him come in.
“You’re always mad at me.” He said and went straight to the cupboard where my glasses were, then my fridge where there was wine.
“It’s a bit too early for wine, don’t touch think?” I asked and joined him at the table.
“It’s never too early to unwind. Especially with the crappy couple of days you and I have had.” he said and handed me a glass, “I looked forward to simply being with you. No anger, no fights” he added and I sipped from my glass.
“I’m always angry. You push me to the wall.”
“You’re too easily pushed he said and reached out to run a finger down my bare arm, “but this time, how about you let me push you over the edge?”
“I don’t know, Elijah. The edge is a scary place, and I sure as hell would take you with me.” I said with a sly smile. “Lucky for me, there’s no place else I’d rather be.”
