I had just changed into my exquisite custom–made wedding dress and finished my makeup, waiting in the luxurious top–tier suite of the hotel for Evan Daxton to arrive and take me to the ceremony.
My best friend and bridesmaid, Lexi Briggs, looked at me with envy written all over her face.
“Lily, you’re absolutely stunning today.”
“It’s alright,” I replied, smiling. “Finally, the tough times are over. Marrying Evan Daxton is a million times better than marrying that ungrateful, heartless Gavin Duke, isn’t it?”
“From now on, it’s all smooth sailing for you. Get ready to enjoy life as Mrs. Daxton, the wife of the wealthiest man!”
I couldn’t help but laugh at Lexi’s words, just as I was about to respond, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.
Following the sound, I turned to see none other than my ex–boyfriend, Gavin Duke, barging in.
He stormed into the room with a group of men and women trailing behind him, pointing at me and yelling.
“I didn’t believe it when someone told me they saw you here, but it’s really you!”
“Lily Gilbert, do you have no shame?”
“Today is my wedding day with Rose Gilbert. We’ve already broken up, and you’re dressed like this–what do you
think you’re doing?”
I glanced down at my elegant, custom–made wedding dress, momentarily confused about what he meant. Was he saying that he and my half–sister, Rose, were also getting married today?
Before I could explain, the group that Gavin had brought started mocking me. Judging by their attire, they seemed to be part of Gavin and Rose’s wedding party.
“Everyone knows Duke has it all–these women just can’t help but cling to him.”
“Even though Duke is getting married, she still won’t give up. Dressing like this, hoping he’ll change his mind.”
“But, hey, it’s understandable. Women, especially those with a bit of beauty, are best at spreading their legs to secure
a better life.”
The last comment was particularly vulgar, drawing laughter from the men in the group.
I cast a cold glance at Gavin.
“I’ve already cut ties with my family. I didn’t even know you and Rose were getting married today.”
“I’m here because it’s my wedding day as well.”
“My husband will be here soon, so I’d appreciate it if you’d all leave now.”

Hearing this, Gavin’s face filled with disdain, as if he thought I was just making it up.
“Hahaha! You? Getting married? To whom? Those mountain kidnappers?”
“How long has it been since we broke up? Who could you possibly marry?”
“Besides, this is my wedding venue. You’re conveniently here, and you expect me to believe that?”
Lexi, furious at Gavin’s arrogance, shouted at them.
“Don’t you understand plain English? Lily is marrying Evan Daxton today. What does it have to do with you?”
“Do you even know who Evan Daxton is? The only son of the Daxton family–the wealthiest family!”
“Think twice about causing trouble here. Do you think you can afford to provoke the Daxton family?”
Lexi’s words brought a moment of silence to the room.
Gavin Duke’s sneering laughter shattered it.
“Hahaha, did you just say Evan Daxton?”
“Do you even know where the Daxton family’s gates are? Do you think someone like you could ever come close to them?”
“This is hilarious. If you actually marry Evan Daxton, I’ll get on my knees and bow to you three times.”
It was true–the Daxton family was a prestigious clan, leagues above the likes of the nouveau riche Duke family. In their eyes, the Daxton family was akin to a deity. How could someone like me possibly marry Evan Daxton?
The onlookers snapped out of their silence, laughing along with Gavin.
“Exactly! As if Evan Daxton would marry someone like you!”
“If I were Evan, with so many women to choose from, why would I settle for you?”
“Have you lost your mind since Gavin dumped you?”
Gavin’s gaze shifted between Lexi and the groomsmen, and an unpleasant smirk spread across his face.
“Your bridesmaid here doesn’t look half bad. Since she’s your bridesmaid and my groomsmen are here, why not let them interact a bit?”
“Come on, brothers. This little girl has a sharp tongue. Let’s play a little wedding game with he.
Gavin’s suggestion immediately excited the groomsmen. They rubbed their hands together and moved toward Lexi.
