Chapter 43
“You don’t have to apologize for her, Damon,” I cut in. “She hates me. We both know that. And I believe that she might have every right to do so, no matter how hard I want to deny it.”
His jaw clenched, but he didn’t deny it.
Instead, he sighed and took another step forward, stopping just a few feet away from me.
“I don’t want her to take things out on you,” he admitted. “She was angry, and she lashed out. But that’s not your problem. Her problem is with me, what and it is not with you. She should not be taking it out on you.”
I studied him for a moment, trying to piece together what had changed in the past few hours.
“Why are you telling me this?” I asked. “Don’t get me wrong, but you are the last person that I would have expected to come to me with an apology, especially for her or yourself to say the least.”
His eyes flickered to mine, and for the briefest moment, I saw something there, something real.
Something I hadn’t seen in a long time.
A piece of the boy I used to know.
You didn’t deserve it,” he said simply. “What she said, everything that she is raging about, you didn’t deserve to hear it.”
My throat tightened, and for a moment, I didn’t know how to respond.
Instead, I took a slow breath, letting my arms fall to my sides.
“You know,” I murmured, my voice softer now. “I’ve been thinking about us. You know, with you spending your time here in the room with Isla and I. I just find myself thinking about it.”
Damon stiffened slightly, but I continued anyway.
“What happened to us, Damon?” I asked, searching his face for an answer. “How did we get here? How did we get to the point where we won’t even look at one another without arguing?”
His gaze darkened, but he didn’t speak.
“We used to be inseparable,” I whispered, lost in the memories that played in my mind. “Do you remember? We were so close that people actually thought we were lovers. We used to laugh at that, used to joke about how one day maybe they’d be right
Damon remained silent, his body tense.
I shook my head, forcing out a hollow laugh. “And now? Now you act like I mean nothing to you. The two of us are acting as if we are enemies rather than Once Upon a time being friends.”
He inhaled sharply, but still, he didn’t answer.
Instead, he took a step backward, his eyes locking onto mine, and for a moment, I thought he was actually going to say something.
But he didn’t
Without a single word, Damon turned on his heel and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.

Chapter 43
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I had been holding, my chest tighting in a way that was far too familiar.
Of course.
Of course he left.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, blinking back the sting in my eyes as I turned back toward the balcony.
I didn’t know why I had expected anything different.
Maybe because for a second, just one second, it almost felt real.
Like we weren’t just two strangers, bound by circumstances.
Like we weren’t just two people pretending that none of it ever mattered.
I let out a shaky exhale, wrapping my arms around myself once more
“What happened to us?” I whispered to the wind.
But like Damon, the wind didn’t have an answer either.
