Mira’s POV
Killian led us into the living room. It was a large space with high ceilings and a warm fireplace crackling in the corner. The furniture looked expensive but comfortable, with soft cushions and thick rugs covering the floor. Alpha Roger was already seated, his sharp eyes fixed on us as we entered. He motioned for us to sit.
“Please, make yourselves comfortable,” he said, his voice calm but commanding.
I sat down on one of the armchairs, gripping the edge tightly. My dad took the seat next to me. Killian remained standing by the doorway, leaning casually against the frame like he had all the time in the world.
Alpha Roger clapped his hands, and a moment later, Luna Marinette walked in. She carried a tray with glasses of water and a small plate of cookies. Her smile was warm as she placed the refreshments on the
table.
“Welcome,” she said gently. “I know it’s been a long day for you both. Please, have something to eat.”
I nodded politely but didn’t touch the cookies. My appetite had disappeared hours ago.
Alpha Roger cleared his throat, drawing our attention back to him. “I am glad you agreed to come and stay here,” he said, his eyes locking on my dad’s. “With everything going on, I was worried about your safety. But now that you’re here, I can finally breathe a little easier.”
My dad nodded. “We appreciate the hospitality, Roger. I wouldn’t have agreed if I didn’t trust you.”
“You can trust me,” Alpha Roger replied firmly. “I’ve already ordered my guards to secure the house. They’ll be stationed around the clock, working in shifts. No one gets in or out without my approval. And I’ve increased the patrols around the pack territory. If Aaron or any of his rogues try anything, they won’t get far.”
His words were reassuring, but I couldn’t help the unease that lingered in my chest.
Alpha Roger turned to Killian. “Why don’t you show them to their rooms? They must be tired.”
Killian pushed off the doorframe, his grin returning. “Of course, dad.”
He picked up my bag and led us upstairs. The staircase was wide and polished, creaking slightly under our steps. Killian stopped at the first door on the right and opened it.
“This one is for you, sir,” he said, addressing my dad.
My dad stepped inside, glancing around. The room was spacious with a large bed, a small desk, and a window overlooking the forest. “This will do nicely,” he said with a nod.
Killian then turned to me and motioned for me to follow him further down the hallway. I hesitated, glancing back at my dad. He gave me a reassuring smile, so I followed.
Killian led me to the very last door at the far end of the hallway. He opened it with a small flourish, stepping aside to let me in. “Here we are,” he said. “Your home away from home.”

The room was cozy, with soft beige walls and a plush rug. The bed was neatly made, and flowers sat on the nightstand. It was nice, but something about being so far from my dad made my chest
tighten.

I turned to Killian. “I would prefer to be closer to my dad. Can you check if there is a room near his?”

Killian’s grin widened, and he leaned casually against the doorframe. “Sorry, Mira, but this is the only one available. Unless you would like to bunk with me?”
I frowned, ignoring his teasing tone. “You’re sure there’s nothing else?”
“Positive,” he said, holding up a hand as if to swear it. “Besides, this room is perfect. Quiet, cozy, and-” he pointed to the wall on the left-“right next to mine. So if you need anything, I am just a knock away.”
I sighed, dropping my bag onto the bed. “Fine. I’ll let you know if I need something.”
Killian didn’t move. He stayed leaning against the doorframe, his eyes fixed on me with a look I couldn’t quite
place.
“What?” I asked, crossing my arms.
“Nothing,” he said, though his smirk said otherwise. “Just making sure you’re all settled in.”
“I’m fine, Killian. You can go now,” I said firmly, trying to mask the warmth creeping into my cheeks.
“Alright, alright,” he said, holding his hands up in mock surrender. But as he turned to leave, he paused in the doorway and glanced back. “Sweet dreams, Mira. Don’t hesitate to call if you get lonely.”
Before I could respond, he was gone, his low chuckle echoing down the hallway. I stared at the empty doorway, my hands clenched at my sides.
Was there really no other room? Or had Killian deliberately put me here, right next to him?
I didn’t know, and I didn’t have the energy to figure it out. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I let out a long breath. My thoughts drifted back to the witch. She might have the answers I needed–the power I needed.
I stood and grabbed a jacket from my bag. If I was going to see her, I needed to plan carefully. The packhouse was heavily guarded, and sneaking out wouldn’t be easy. But if Aaron was truly alive, I couldn’t afford to wait. The memory of his name sent a shiver down my spine. I clenched my fists. I had to be stronger, for myself
and for my pack.
I glanced at the wall separating my room from Killian’s. His words echoed in my mind: “If you need anything, I am just a knock away.”
I shook my head, pushing the thought aside. This wasn’t the time to be distracted. I had a mission, and nothing was going to stop me.
