Chapter 37
Mira’s POV
I woke up the next morning feeling restless. The sun streamed through my window, warm and golden, but it did little to lift my mood. Last night had been tense, and Killian’s unexpected visit still weighed on my mind. His warning echoed in my head. Take care of yourself. Was it genuine concern? Or was it something else?
I shook my head and got out of bed. There was no point dwelling on it. Today would be a quiet day, or at least, I hoped it would be. After brushing my hair and putting on a simple dress, I headed downstairs. The scent of freshly brewed coffee filled the air, and I found my mother bustling around the kitchen.
“Good morning, Mira,” she greeted me with a warm smile. “Did you sleep well?”
I shrugged. “Well enough.”
“Breakfast is almost ready,” she said, turning back to the stove.
I sat down at the table, appreciating the peacefulness of the moment. But that peace was short–lived. A knock sounded at the door, and my mother hurried to answer it.
“Killian! Good morning,” she said, her voice bright with surprise.
. I stiffened in my chair as he stepped inside. Killian looked different today. His face was calm, relaxed even.
The tension from last night was gone. He smiled politely at my mother before his eyes flicked to me.
“Good morning,” he greeted.
I gave a small nod, avoiding his gaze. Sophia, on the other hand, looked pleased. She was practically glowing as she slipped her arm through his.
“Killian came to have breakfast,” Sophia announced, her voice sugary sweet.
“Oh, how lovely,” my mother said, clapping her hands together. “Sit down, all of you. Breakfast will be ready in
a moment.”
Sophia dragged Killian to the seat next to her, making sure he was as close as possible. I watched quietly as they settled in. Killian’s behavior had shifted completely. He was attentive to Sophia, his gaze soft when he
looked at her.
“Do you want some coffee?” Sophia asked him, already reaching for the pot.
“Yes, thank you,” Killian replied, his tone gentle.
I kept my eyes on my plate, grateful that his attention was no longer on me. The less interaction I had with him, the better.
“Did you sleep well, Killian?” my mother asked as she placed a plate of scrambled eggs and toast on the
table.
“I did,” he said with a nod. “Thank you for asking.”
Sophia leaned into him, smiling brightly. “We had such a nice talk last night, didn’t we?”
Killian smiled back, a soft chuckle escaping him. “We did.”
I glanced at them out of the corner of my eye. They looked… happy. Maybe they had made up after all. A

strange mix of relief and sadness settled in my chest. Relief because Killian’s focus was now on Sophia where it belonged. Sadness because, deep down, I wished things had been different.
“Are you excited about the wedding?” my mother asked, sitting down across from them.
“Very excited,” Sophia answered quickly. “Everything is coming together perfectly.”
Killian nodded in agreement. “It’s important to Sophia, so it’s important to me.”
Sophia beamed, resting her head on his shoulder. “See, Killian understands me.”
My mother sighed happily. “You two make a beautiful couple.”

I swallowed a lump in my throat, keeping my eyes down. The food on my plate had suddenly lost its appeal.
“What about you, Mira?” Killian’s voice cut through my thoughts.
I looked up, startled. “What?”
“Are you doing okay?” he asked, his tone neutral.
“I’m fine,” I said quickly. “No need to worry about me.”
He nodded, his expression unreadable. Sophia, however, narrowed her eyes at me, but she didn’t say
anything.
Breakfast continued in relative silence, the occasional chatter between Sophia and my mother filling the room. Killian remained quiet, eating methodically. I picked at my food, wishing the meal would end soon. After what felt like an eternity, my mother stood up. “Sophia, Killian, we should get going. Your parents are expecting us to finalize some of the arrangements.”
Sophia clapped her hands in excitement. “Yes! I can’t wait to see the venue again.”
My mother turned to me. “Mira, do you want to come along?”
“No, thank you,” I said, shaking my head. “I’ll stay here.”
“Are you sure?” she asked, concern flickering in her eyes. “You’ll be all alone.”
“I’ll be fine,” I assured her. “Really. I could use the quiet.”
“Well, alright then,” she said, though she didn’t seem entirely convinced. “There is some food in the fridge if you get hungry. Just heat it up.”
“I will,” I promised.
Sophia stood, grabbing Killian’s hand. “Come on, Killian. We don’t want to be late.”
He rose from his seat, giving me a final glance before following them to the door.
“Take care, Mira,” my mother said, kissing my cheek.
“I will. Have a good time,” I replied.
The door closed behind them, and for the first time in days, the house was completely silent. A sense of calm washed over me. I was finally alone. No tension, no awkward conversations. Just peace.
I wandered into the living room, grabbing a book from the shelf. Curling up on the couch, I let myself get lost in the story. Everything was so peaceful.
