The music was loud, too loud. It thumped against my chest, but I barely noticed it over the weight of my own thoughts.
I took a slow sip of the so–called non–alcoholic fruit punch and almost laughed at the blatant lie. The burn in my throat was unmistakable.
I shouldn’t have come.
Ever since Queen Bee had exposed everything, I couldn’t step into a crowded room without feeling like a walking scandal. Every time I looked up, someone was already staring, whispering. Maybe it was all in my head. Maybe not. Either way, it was enough to make me want to disappear.
The only reason I was here was for Sheela. The second she cuts her birthday cake, I am out.
Suddenly, the air shifted. Those eyes which were preying on me was now on someone else, but they weren’t the ones of hunters, those eyes were sparkling, sparking with amusement.
Kaiden.
The energy in the room changed the moment he walked in, just like it always did. I sucked in a breath before I turned to him, forcing a small, hesitant smile.
Act normal, Luc. You have to act normal, after all we are step–siblings.
“Kaiden-”
He didn’t even look at me.
His gaze passed right over me, like I wasn’t even there. Like I was just another forgettable face in the crowd. He walked straight ahead, shoulders relaxed, face unreadable, not sparing me even a fraction of a second.
Something inside me twisted painfully.
It was one thing to be hated. Another to be pitied. But this? This was worse. It felt like I was nothing to him. Like those moments we had were all just a dream, my dream, which he has no hit about.
I swallowed against the tightness in my throat, trying to ignore the sudden hollow feeling settling in my chest.
A hand landed gently on my shoulder distracting me from the hollow that I myself was responsible for.
“Luc…” Rubina’s voice was soft, careful. “Are you alright?”
I let out a short, humorless laugh. “Never been better.”
She didn’t believe me. I could feel her stare, pressing, waiting. “It’s Kaiden, isn’t it?”
I opened my mouth to deny it, but what was the point? My hands clenched at my sides, my nails digging into my palms.
“I just…” My voice was quieter now, barely audible over the music. “I just can’t take it. The way he looks through me. Like I was never anything to him.”
Rubína stayed silent, letting me speak.
“Sometimes, I wonder…” I bit my lip, willing my voice to stay steady. “Did Kaiden ever even love me? Or was it all just a lie?” Rubina’s lips parted, like she wanted to say something, but I wasn’t done.

Chapter 83
“You know,” I forced a smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “When he broke up with you, he needed a hundred dozen girls to forget a single moment he spent with you.” My voice wavered, but I kept going. “But now? In my case, he doesn’t even need
one.”
I exhaled sharply, shaking my head. “I guess…. his memories with me were so worthless that he doesn’t even need to bother forgetting them. He just…” I swallowed, “doesn’t remember them at all.”
“No, no, no, no,” Rubina’s voice came urgently, shaking her head as she gripped my shoulders. “You’re wrong.”
I blinked at her, confused and a little overwhelmed by the intensity in her voice.
“He doesn’t need any girl not because he doesn’t remember those moments with you but because he doesn’t want to forget them, Lucy,” she said, eyes burning with conviction.
My throat tightened. I wanted to believe her, but how could I, when all I had seen was Kaiden walking past me like I didn’t exist?
Rubina wasn’t done. “When a man is habituated to a woman, it takes him a hundred meaningless nights with a hundred different women to finally break the habit.” Her voice softened, but there was a hidden pain in it. “But when a man loves a woman… he can even die a virgin for her and never regret an ounce.”
I sucked in a breath, my hands trembling slightly.
“The number of women it takes a man to move on tells you how serious he was about that woman,” she continued, her words slow and deliberate as she looked at the bar. “But the number of women he resists? That tells you how much he loves her.”
Her words were mesmerizingly soothing, but still, it hurted me more than before because now the pain of being nothing was taken by the guilt of ruining everything.
I followed her gaze to the bar.
Kaiden stood there, fingers gripping the glass so tightly I thought it might shatter. His jaw was clenched, his entire body tense. Then, without hesitation, he threw back the whiskey in one shot, as if trying to drown something deep inside him.
Rubina exhaled, turning back to me. “He used women in my case because I was his habit. He resists women in your case because you are his love.”
I could hear the ache in her voice now. She straightened her shoulders, forcing herself to appear unfazed, but I knew better. She hasn’t moved on from him. Not entirely.
Still, here she was, standing beside me, comforting me. She is truly a pure soul.
“A habit can be detached from a person,” she said, her voice quieter now, more thoughtful. “But love? It stays in you.”
She looked back at Kaiden, then at me. “Even if it stays as a seed of hatred.”
I swallowed hard.
She sighed, crossing her arms. “And you know what’s the best part about the seed of hate?” A small, bitter smile touched her lips. “It completely fucks the rule that only mangoes grow from mango seeds.”
My brows furrowed. “What do you mean?”
Rubina gestured toward Kaiden. “If you nurture the seed of hate with love, effort, trust, hope, loyalty, and enthusiasm… it can grow back into a tree of love.” She turned to me, eyes sharp. “So, Lucy, I don’t know why you made him hate you so much, but before that seed of hate turns into a tree of hate–nurture it.”
I stared at her, completely shaken.

Chapter 83
She was still in pain, still recovering from her own heartbreak, yet she was standing here, telling me how to fix things with
him.
A lump formed in my throat.
Rubina took a deep breath, straightening her posture before clearing her throat. “You should try talking to him,” she said, her voice steady again. “Talking is the best way to rebuild a broken relationship.”
Before I could react, she turned me around and gave me a slight push in Kaiden’s direction.
I panicked, turning myself to face her again. “But, Ru-”
She stepped forward and pressed her index finger against my lips. “Don’t but me.”
I froze.
She smirked, but there was a bittersweet sadness in it. “Talk to him… or I’ll seduce him back.”
My heart dropped.
“And I really don’t want to be the villain in your story, Lucy,” she said softly. “So don’t make me.”
Something inside me cracked. My chest tightened as a rush of emotions overwhelmed me.
Without thinking, I threw my arms around her.
She stiffened for half a second before sighing and hugging me back.
To be continued…
