It was Rubina. She was the one who held Amber’s wrist and blocked her slap.

Rubina stood tall, her expression unreadable, but her posture as confident and commanding as ever. “Enough of your bullshit,” her voice rang out, laced with anger that felt too personal.

Amber’s eyes widened, her teeth gritting in frustration as she tried to jerk her wrist free, but Rubina’s grip was firm, unyielding.

“You have no right to slap her,” Rubina continued, her tone calm but edged with steel. “Just because four of your sidekicks think you’re the most eligible to be Kaiden’s girlfriend doesn’t mean you actually are.”

“I-” Amber opened her mouth to snap back at Rubina, but Rubina didn’t give her the chance.

“Don’t.” She cut her off. “Don’t even dare.” Rubina warned. “You’re just a spoiled brat who throws tantrums when you can’t get your way, so don’t even dare to act like you care about what’s right and wrong.”

Amber’s face twisted in frustration. She clenched her fist tightly at her side, her jaw clenched, trying to look tough. Her eyes narrowed as her chest rose and fell with fast, heavy breaths. But they didn’t even manage to flinch Rubina. She stood tall, staring straight at Amber, her eyes cold and unblinking. The look of challenge on her face was stiff, and it felt like she was daring Amber to make any kind of stupid move.

After a long moment of silent stare–down, Amber finally dropped her gaze, her breath shaky as she tried to keep herself together.

With a final shove, Rubina released Amber’s wrist, making her stumble backward, her face flushed with humiliation.

Rubina then looked at me, her gaze softening more than before. She wrapped her fingers around my wrist and held it firm yet gently. “Come on,” she said, her voice like a lifeboat in the middle of the sea of judgmental eyes around us. “Let’s get out of this mess.”

I didn’t even hesitate. I just followed her.

Away from the chaos, away from Amber, away from the whispers and stares.

As we moved further, I stole a glance back. Amber was still standing there, in the same spot, her expression indicating pure fury. But I didn’t care about her. All I cared about was Rubina. What would she think of me? She was holding my hand and guiding me forward as if she were an agent on a mission to rescue me from the judgmental eyes, but was she? Was she rescuing me? I mean, she had history with Kaiden. Would she be okay with it? Okay with me? Okay with the fact that he confessed his love to me, instead of her?

The cafe’s soft hum of chatter barely registered as I sat across from Rubina. The steam rising from her tea was the only thing that seemed to move in the thick stillness between us. We hadn’t said much since leaving school. The weight of everything unsaid pressed down like a fog.

Finally, Rubina broke the silence.

“I knew this was coming,” she said, her voice quiet but firm. “From the moment I heard Kaiden threaten you in a way no brother ever would, I knew you guys were heading straight into danger.”

Her words hit like a shock.

The fact that Rubina had a hunch about it made me feel embarrassed.

I dropped my gaze to my hands. “I am sorry,” I murmured. “I know you have still not moved on from him. But trust me, it’s not like what Queen Bee showed. She manipulated the video. It was just a half truth.”

Rubina leaned forward, her tone softer but no less serious. “Lucy, you don’t have to lie. The video may have held half truth, but there was a truth. And it’s okay to fall for Kaiden. I am telling it with my personal experience, Kaiden’s not someone you can just walk away from. He pulls people in. He always does. That’s his magic. He makes you fall in love with him, just like that.” She snapped her finger. “In seconds.”

I met her gaze, a mix of gratitude and guilt swelling inside me. She wasn’t angry. She wasn’t blaming me; she was trying to understand, and that was enough for now.

“Do you think I can get out of this?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. “Can I stop loving him?” I don’t know why I asked her, or maybe I know. Because she was once in love with him, madly like I am right now. Maybe she could guide me, how to survive after loving Kaiden Sterwalt.

Rubina took a slow sip of her tea before answering. “You can try,” she said. “But Kaiden has a way of making sure you don’t…” She paused and her jaw clenched. It was as if she was having inner turmoil before she finally spoke, her voice softer than a murmur. “Until he gets bored of you.”

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the table, pulling me out of the conversation.

My heart clenched and breathing became heavy when I saw the name flashing across the screen.

MOM.

Dread curled in my stomach as I unlocked the phone.

“What the fuck is wrong with you? I told you to stay away from Kaiden. Since you’ve decided to act like this, I have no choice but to give your address to Ross.”

A cold shiver ran down my spine. Ross. The name alone was a warning, a threat I couldn’t ignore.

I can’t let my mom make the deal with the devil.

I took a steadying breath and typed a response, my fingers trembling slightly but my resolve firm.

“No need to go berserk. It’s not my fault Queen Bee has beef with me. Handle the post. I’ll make sure the next time Kaiden looks at me, all his eyes will have for me is hate.”

I hit send and put my phone down, my pulse hammering and throat tightening.

Rubina’s words, her misunderstanding about Kaiden, gave me an idea. An idea to keep Kaiden away from me. An idea to make him hate me, so that my mom won’t have any reason to contact Ross.

I looked up at Rubina. She was watching me with concern in her eyes. She didn’t say anything right away. Instead, she reached across the table, her hand warm and steady against mine. “Is everything all right?” She asked.

“Rubi,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I want to tell you something. About Kaiden. The truth that you should know,”

Her brow furrowed slightly. “Wha..at… What do you mean?”

I took a deep breath, the weight of everything pressing down on me. I know I was doing wrong. I had no right to tell this to Rubína. It wasn’t my story to tell. But I still made this choice. So that Kaiden would feel betrayed and hate me, hate me to the core, but for real this time, not like a pretend, like he did in case of Rubina.

“Kaiden didn’t break up with you because he was bored.” I finally said it. My heart clenching due to fear of how Kaiden would react when he will know that I spilled the secret that he was hiding in the deepest corner of his heart. “There was a different story behind it. He was protecting you.”
