The hallways of West Sterlingo High buzzed with whispers, but they were nothing compared to the obnoxious storm of voices that rang inside my mind.
What will they think of me? Am I getting expelled for this? What will Dan think? How will he react? Will this rumor affect his mayoral campaign? Will he throw me out of Sterwalt Mansion? Am I going back to boarding school?
Why would Barbara do something so vicious? She said she loved me. Is this how love is supposed to be? Is this her revenge?
I stood frozen, my phone still clutched in my trembling hand, staring at the screen as Queen Bee’s venomous words burned into my vision.
It wasn’t my paranoia. She was actually there. Yesterday, Barbara was there when Kaiden confessed his love to me. I don’t know where she hid, but she was there. She heard everything and made this post as revenge.
The truth was out, and there was no way to escape it. Every laugh, every sneer, every judgment that had once been whispered behind my back was now out in the open for everyone to see. Everyone around me was judging openly. Before, they used to fear, but now, they were gossiping as if they had every right to.
Before I could gather my thoughts, a shadow loomed over me.
I turned, the sharp scent of floral perfume invading my senses, and there she was–Amber Davis.
Her usual arrogant smirk twisted into something even colder, her eyes alight with something vicious. Behind her, her two sidekicks stood like passive observers, watching the scene unfold with a mix of amusement and anticipation.
“Look who we have here,” Amber drawled, flicking her manicured nails as if the mere sight of me disgusted her. “The town’s latest it girl. Who would’ve thought? The quiet little stepsister, caught red–handed playing her cards all too well… until she couldn’t keep her dirty little secret any longer.”

Linhaled sharply, my lips parting to fire back, but-

The force of the slap sent my head snapping to the side, my cheek stinging with the harsh imprint of her palm. The hallway seemed to quiet around me, the ringing in my ears drowning out everything else.
Amber’s breath was ragged with fury as she leaned in, her voice a venomous whisper. “Don’t you dare open your filthy mouth in front of me,” she spat, her face contorted with unmasked disgust.
Her fingers shot forward, fisting in my hair and yanking my head back. A sharp sting radiated across my scalp as she tightened her grip, her nails digging into my skin.
“How dare you seduce Kaiden Sterwalt? He is mine,” she seethed, her nostrils flaring as she pulled me even closer. “You think you can just waltz in and take what’s mine?”
I gasped, struggling against her hold. “Amber, leave me! Let go of me!” My fingers clawed at her wrist, trying to loosen her grip, but she only yanked harder, making me stumble forward.
Amber let out a cruel laugh, her breath fanning against my face. “Leave you?” she mocked. “I’m not gonna leave someone filthy like you until I make you do the walk of shame.”
With that, she dragged me forward, her grip so tight I could feel strands of my hair being ripped from my scalp. The hallway blurred as students gasped and murmured around us, some stepping forward as if contemplating whether to intervene–but no one did.
“Let go of me, you bitch!” I dug my nails deep into the soft skin of her knuckles, feeling the flesh beneath my fingertips. She yelped, her grip loosening just enough for me to wrench myself free.
Amber stumbled back, her gaze snapping to the back of her hand, where red, angry scratch marks bloomed across her skin. Her chest rose and fell in furious heaves, her lips pulling back in a snarl.
“You-” she hissed, raising her hand again-
But before it could land, something stopped her.
A hand.
A strong, unyielding grip shot out from beside me, catching Amber’s wrist mid–air.
Amber’s eyes widened in shock, her wrist trapped in a vice–like hold. She bit her lower lip, her teeth sinking in, as she struggled to free herself–but the grip was stronger than her struggle.
I turned my head toward the person who blocked Amber’s hand, my pulse roaring in my ears as my gaze met with that person.
For a moment, the world seemed to tilt, everything narrowing to the person before me.
