My vision blurred with tears as I read the comments. They were too rude this time. Though there was also the part where QueenBee had written that I had star–shaped candy, which is famous for being ecstasy, the mind–blowing drug that makes a person do wild things, nobody cared to look at that fact and show a little mercy before being so rude.
I know I was wrong, but I didn’t deserve such a blind and brutal judgment from everyone.
My hands tightened around the phone, my knuckles turning white. My chest felt heavy, like I couldn’t draw a full breath. Everyone around me was either looking at me with mockery–filled eyes or disgust.
“Lucy, is it true?” a voice, familiar and sharp, cut through the air from behind me.
I wiped my tears hastily with the sleeve of my sweater and turned to see Amber Davis. She stood tall and proud, the so- called queen of the school’s social scene, striding toward me with her sidekicks, Barbie and Tiara.
“Well… looks like somebody got nothing to say? Or are you too busy thinking of an excuse?” Tiara taunted, tilting her head as her lips curled into a malicious smile. Her voice was loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby.
“I don’t owe you guys any explanation,” I said, my voice trembling despite my attempt to sound firm. My nails dug into my palm as I clenched my fists tightly, hoping to stop them from shaking.
“Guess that’s a yes, then,” Amber sneered, her arms crossed as she examined me with a smug expression. Her laugh was like nails on a chalkboard, sending murmurs rippling through the crowd now gathered around me.
Barbara suddenly appeared by my side, huffing and puffing, her cheeks flushed from running. It was clear that she had dashed right after seeing the post, thinking I might need her right now.
“Back off, Amber. And you, Tiara–the human pet of Amber–leave her alone. You guys have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said firmly, her chin lifted high as she stared straight at them. Her eyes were full of fire, cutting through Amber and her group–the same girls she used to admire so much.
Even with the pain in my chest, I felt a small flicker of warmth for having a friend like her. She talked back to her most favorite girls‘ group, just for me.
She had put her personal interest aside and faced them, just to protect me. It made me realize how lucky I was to have a friend like her.
“Oh, come on, Barbara. That’s your name, right?” Amber said, her sly grin deepening as she tossed her hair over one shoulder. “Even you can’t deny that it’s all a little too convenient. First Brendan, now Thor? She’s practically begging for attention.”
“Brendan was a jerk,” Barbara retorted, her voice shaking slightly with anger.
“Or she made him like that?” Amber countered, leaning closer with a wicked glint in her eyes. “He was a decent guy dating her.”

“He was decent because he was gay, pretending to be a man,” Rubina interjected, stepping beside me and glaring at Amber. Her voice dripped with disdain. “You can be decent when you’re pretending to be one. You must know it well, Amber, since you’re the pro in this case.”
