Chapter 46
At the management block, I was spying on Brendan through the doorframe, using it as cover to hide myself in case he looked my way.
The rough edge of the wooden doorframe pressed against the bridge of my nose, making it feel uncomfortable as I leaned in closer. My heart raced slightly, the beat quickening as I tried to stay unnoticed, holding my breath just in case.
“I thought you believed Brendan is innocent,” Barbara murmured from behind me, her breath tickling my ear. She leaned over my shoulder, peering around the frame in the same sneaky posture.
“Yeah, I did,” I replied instinctively, my focus narrowing entirely on Brendan. My heartbeat thudded in my ears as I watched his every move.
“Then why are we here, spying on him?” she whispered, her voice light, almost teasing, as though she were making fun of my detective mode.
“Because I don’t wanna miss any clue,” I replied, not looking away.
“What are you doing?” A sharp, velvety voice, rich with familiarity, rang from behind, making both Barbara and me jump.
I spun around to find Kaiden standing there, his figure casually leaning against the wall, a smirk curling at the corners of his lips.
“You,” I said, crossing my arms, deliberately feigning irritation in a desperate attempt to mask the fluttering butterflies that had suddenly taken flight in my stomach at the sight of him.
“Kaiden!” Barbara squealed, her eyes lighting up, and she nearly bounced on her toes like an excited fan seeing their favorite celebrity.
Kaiden ignored her energetic greeting with practiced indifference, his gaze focused solely on me. “Yes, me. Is there any problem?” he asked, his voice low and teasing.
“No,” I shrugged, unwilling to give him the satisfaction of knowing how flustered he made me.
“Then why are you here?” he asked, raising an eyebrow slightly. His voice had that teasing tone, as if he already knew the answer. “Is it about yesterday-”
Before he could finish, I acted on impulse. I grabbed his arm, spun him around, and shoved him into the wall next to the doorframe with a soft thud. In one quick movement, I pressed my hand over his mouth, cutting him off.
“We are not talking about it,” I said firmly, trying to ignore the heat spreading from where my hand touched his skin.
He removed my hand from his mouth, his fingers brushing my wrist as he did so. “Then tell me why didn’t you wait for me this morning?” he asked, his eyes narrowing in genuine curiosity.
“Ah… um… Mom told me to,” I replied hesitantly, my throat tightening a little under his gaze.
“Since when did you start obeying her?” he asked, his voice skeptical, his lips curling into a half–smile that only made me feel more self–conscious.
“Why’d your mom tell you not to wait for him?” Barbara’s voice rang out from behind me, her tone laced with curiosity, making me jump. “I thought she was all about making you two get along and strengthen the sibling bond.”
“Barb!” I gasped, glancing at her over my shoulder, caught off guard by her sudden interruption. “Kaiden!” I looked back and forth between them. “Seriously? What’s with you two? Can you stop bombarding me with your questions? I am not a celebrity, and you guys are not the reporters, understood??” I said, gesturing with my index finger, frustration bubbling
inside me.

“Fine,” Kaiden let out a sigh, his shoulders dropping in exaggerated resignation. “I’ll let you breathe for now, but I need my answers later,” he said, his voice turning serious. I was one hundred percent aware that the answer he needed wasn’t from the question he had just asked. It was the one he had asked me last night, after we kissed. “So tell me, what are you guys doing
here?”
“We are here to spy on Brendan,” Barbara replied, her voice bubbling with excitement like a child who had just discovered something new. “We have a doubt that he is Queen Bee,” she said, her eyes sparkling with mischievous excitement.
“Nah, he is not,” Kaiden responded without missing a beat, the confidence in his tone unquestionable.
“He is not? How could you be so sure?” I asked, a frown of curiosity pinching my forehead as I stared at him, trying to read his expression.
Kaiden looked at me lazily, his lips twitching into an almost playful grin. “What kind of ex–girlfriend are you?” he asked, raising an eyebrow, the teasing edge to his words making my cheeks flush. He then curled his arm around my shoulder. pulling me slightly closer, and guided me toward the doorframe. The sudden proximity froze me, and I felt a rush of warmth spread through my cheeks.
“Look at him,” Kaiden said, his voice dropping an octave, and I couldn’t help but comply. I followed his gaze, my stomach tightening. Brendan was handing money to one of his classmates, his eyes darting around nervously as if ensuring no one saw the exchange. Then, the student handed him a file, and it looked suspiciously like one of the assignments we had been given.
“Today our history professor is collecting the solo report writing assignment he assigned us a month ago, and see… that douchebag is buying that from that curly–haired nerd,” Kaiden continued, his voice low, as though savoring the moment of uncovering Brendan’s secret.
“So?” I asked, my mind still reeling from the discovery.
“So… why do you think that the guy who can’t even write a report properly would write such sensational posts and articles like Queen Bee writes?” Kaiden’s words made sense, and I felt a small weight lift from my chest. “Brendan isn’t Queen Bee. It should be someone who is good with literature. Someone who gets A–plus in it.” He then looked at Barbara, his gaze sharp and focused. “What’s your last grade in literature?” His eyes were filled with serious doubt, and I noticed the slight tension in his jaw.
“A–plus,” she replied slowly, her voice almost unsure as if the question had thrown her off guard.
“Exactly,” Kaiden said, his tone victorious as if he had just solved a complicated puzzle.
