Charlotte’s face went pale.
She wasn’t some naive teenager. His words and the look in his eyes made his intentions crystal clear.
She jerked back from his breath, panic rising. “Don’t you dare!”
Issac seized her shoulder with one hand, pulling her toward him. “How is this ‘daring‘? What happens between husband and wife is nobody’s business. Not even the cops can interfere.”

“You were always so focused on your career, never wanting kids, always being careful,” he whispered, his lips against her ear, voice rough like sandpaper. “Tonight let’s skip the protection. Maybe next month you’ll be pregnant.”

His words terrified her to her core. She struggled violently.
Issac trailed kisses from her ear to her cheek. “How about a compromise? A wager. If you don’t get pregnant tonight, I’ll let you go. If you do, you come back home with me.”
Charlotte was outraged by his shocking, shameless proposal.
She spat at him. “Go to hell! I’m not making any bet with you! What gives you the right to control my life?”
All her good upbringing vanished in that moment.
“When you’re pregnant, you’ll feel differently,” Issac said, flicking his cigarette out the window. He reclined her seat and leaned over her.

Charlotte pounded her fists against his chest, resisting, fighting to prevent what was happening.
Her delicate white hands were no match for his powerful body. Even using all her strength, sweat beading on her forehead, she couldn’t budge him an inch.
Her arms were bent back.
He pressed closer.

He admitted to himself that his feelings for her had faded somewhat, especially these past six months. The excitement of something new had made him reluctant to come home, to communicate with her. She looked at him through tear–filled eyes. Perhaps influenced by her emotional breakdown, or perhaps bewitched by mountain spirits, she suddenly felt so exhausted, so annoyed, so helpless. “Will only my death make you stop?”
Issac lost his voice.
His hand hovered by her cheek as he stared at her, stunned.
He had no answer.
Everything had been destined for disaster from the moment he couldn’t resist Evelyn’s temptation, when he took that first wrong step. Like a domino castle, once the first piece fell, collapse was inevitable.
Impossible to stop, completely out of control.
They sat in silence, staring at each other for a long time.
Neither spoke, both seemingly drained of energy.
After what seemed like forever, Charlotte suddenly said, “I’m hungry. I want something to eat.”
Issac responded glumly: “I’ll go buy you something.”
As he moved to get out, he realized there was nowhere to buy food in this wilderness.
And the car was out of gas.
Charlotte noticed his hesitation. “My leg isn’t fully healed, and you just hurt it again. I can’t run away.”
Issac didn’t explain himself. “I’ll look around for a small store or something nearby. Wait for me in the car.”

Issac got out and locked the doors.
He checked his phone’s map and found that the nearest small supermarket was about a half–hour walk away.
He tried to find the store’s phone number, hoping they might deliver, but couldn’t find one.
Food delivery services were all beyond the delivery range.
He’d have to go to that small supermarket himself.
